This blog post has a great precis of an article reporting that the brain is less competent after midnight.
From the study:
“The resulting “Mind After Midnight” hypothesis states that the mind isn’t set up to operate as it does in the daytime, and as a result, we’re more likely to make impulsive and even “risky” decisions.”
If you scroll down the post, there’s a great video that covers fifteen different things you can do before bed that help you get an excellent night’s sleep.
The things he mentions that I’m going to try:
- Turn off overhead lights
- 200-400 theanine
- Melatonin, but not often
- 400 ml magnesium
- Chamomile tea
- 20 grams of collagen powder for the 3 grams of glycine, but I might just take glycine powder
- Bath or shower before bed
- Back and body stretches
- No food or dinner after 7 pm
- 30 minutes before bedtime reduce temperature to 19 C
- Run an air purifier with a heap filter
- Tape my mouth
- Weighted blanket
